Grand Cayman is awesome.
Grand Cayman is awesome.
Sorry this hasn't come out sooner. So much has happened!! So I started my new job, which has been great. I really like my co-workers and the diving has been a lot of fun. I found a place to live with another dive instructor, Tricia and another couple who I haven't actually seen yet. And best of all, Mike finally got out here on Friday!
So a few notes on the last three weeks...
I've been working lots and lots, getting to know my new job and all the fun stuff that goes along with it! It's a busy place around here... I work at the Lobster Pot dive center, which is a shop with a great shore diving location, called Cheeseburger Reef (we're next door to Burger King, haha!) We run mostly dive courses and Discover Scuba, which is a one-time dive course, where you can try out diving for the first time in shallow water. We run the Discover Scuba Diving with Carnival cruise ships as well, so they keep us busy whenever their ships are in port.
We also have a few boats that come in and out of the Lobster Pot. They are our sister/partner companies. So they use our dock and our dive shop to sell their merchandise and we collaborate on dive courses and such. It's a bit confusing with all the different people running around, but I think I've just about got it figured out!
I've been doing a lot of diving and the water out here is amazing. It's really warm... 83, 84 degrees and the water is so clear. I've seen quite a lot of good stuff already: turtles, stingrays, a shark, eels and an octopus! On one dive site, a small wall dive, I went to the left and another group went to the right and saw a 10 ft hammerhead! I missed it this time, but when I go to that site again I am definitely going right!!
So Mike got in last Friday and has had a few days to start settling in. He started work on Tuesday! On Sunday I had the day off, so we got to do a bit of exploring. My wonderful housemate lent me her car so we could go explore the island a little more. I showed Mike around George Town and 7 Mile Beach, which is where I've been bopping around for the last three weeks. Then we went somewhere new! Over to the east side of the island, which is about a 40 minute drive from George Town. It was really fun to see something different. I was shocked to see big waves crashing on the rocky East End, since 7 Mile Beach is all calm water and white sand. We stopped by the Botanical Gardens and wandered around there as well. There is a small population of Cayman Islands BLUE iguanas that live there. We found two of them!!
Life is good. We're settling in and meeting people and generally enjoying island life. As we start to get more comfortable with the island, I'm sure we'll have more fun adventures to share :) Until then...
Love and fishes!
