New Years Reolutions

Welcome back to my blog! I've decided to start this up again, so read on and I'll catch you up on my life and my inspiration for getting back to blogging. ... Working in the dive industry is weird. Vacation time is on a completely different schedule. While much of the world is enjoying time off with family around the holidays, we are working our tails off during our busiest time of the year. From mid-December, I had Christmas Day and New Year's Day off, but otherwise I was working 7 days a week from 6:45am until 3:30 or 4pm without much downtime. During this time, our boats are full and our dives are many. I am hugely grateful, however, that in the midst of the chaos, I did get Christmas Day off and, after 6 years, actually got to spend the day with my family!! Mom and Dad came down for the 22-28 and I can't even explain how magical it was waking up on Christmas morning to not only a day off, but a day off with family. And mom bought us matching pajamas so it was e...

Pirates Week, Grand Cayman

So we're still technically in the midst of low season. Aside from the cruise ships which come in 3-4 days a week, there hasn't been a whole lot of diving action. BUT, Grand Cayman has had some other very fun activities in store. Pirate's Week! I've heard quite a lot of debate about the history of pirates in Cayman. According to some, the pirate lore that travels around the island is mostly untrue and pirates only visited Grand Cayman for food runs. Back in the day, Grand Cayman was literally crawling with sea turtles so the pirates would run in, grab as many as they needed, and leave. But that history is not nearly as much fun. So I'm going to chose to believe that Blackbeard still has treasure buried in a sea cave on Cayman Brac, and that other pirates cruised around these waters regularly. So Pirate's Week is an annual festival that falls in October or November. It falls during the low season, so it's a good way to encourage tourism when the island i...

Mom and Dad in Grand Cayman!

Hello everyone! So firstly, I'm sorry it's been a little while. I haven't forgotten about my blog, it's just been on the back burner while I've been getting a solid life and schedule and all that. But, good news! I turned in the application for my one-year work permit, so it looks like we're going to be sticking around for a while! Life in Cayman has been great. Especially this last weekend! Mom and Dad came to visit!! They always like to scope out where I'm living. Partially because I live on a cool island, but also I don't think Dad fully trusts my ability to find suitable/safe housing. It was one bad apartment in Hawaii and I don't think I'll ever live it down! Anyway, my parents came over on Friday and we did a whirlwind weekend tour of Grand Cayman! On Friday I took them to my favorite local bar, Rackems. Regardless of the fact that no dive instructors have normal Monday-Friday work schedules, Friday night, Rackems is always packed w...

Grand Cayman is awesome.

Grand Cayman is awesome. Sorry this hasn't come out sooner. So much has happened!! So I started my new job, which has been great. I really like my co-workers and the diving has been a lot of fun. I found a place to live with another dive instructor, Tricia and another couple who I haven't actually seen yet. And best of all, Mike finally got out here on Friday! So a few notes on the last three weeks... I've been working lots and lots, getting to know my new job and all the fun stuff that goes along with it! It's a busy place around here... I work at the Lobster Pot dive center, which is a shop with a great shore diving location, called Cheeseburger Reef (we're next door to Burger King, haha!) We run mostly dive courses and Discover Scuba, which is a one-time dive course, where you can try out diving for the first time in shallow water. We run the Discover Scuba Diving with Carnival cruise ships as well, so they keep us busy whenever their ships are in port....

New blog for a new job!

Welcome to my new blog!! I had some troubles with the old one...the name had changed so many times I figure its better to start fresh, so new job= new blog! So recap: went to Australia, became dive instructor, found boyfriend (Mike). Visa ended, moved to Thailand. Worked in Thailand for nearly a year then finally went home for a bit. Found job in Mexico in a teeny town four hours south of Cancun called Mahahual. Cute little beach town, nice diving, but not much social interaction for Mike and I. Since we worked with cruise ships most of the time, our customers were only in town for a couple hours. We worked for a relatively small shop with 6 of us at the beginning of the season, but as the season continued,  people began leaving for various reasons until it was just me and Mike and our manager. It wasn't quite the overly social and active life that we had grown accustomed to in Oz and Thailand. After the high season was over, six months after we moved down there, we headed back...
