Mom and Dad in Grand Cayman!
Hello everyone!
So firstly, I'm sorry it's been a little while. I haven't forgotten about my blog, it's just been on the back burner while I've been getting a solid life and schedule and all that.
But, good news! I turned in the application for my one-year work permit, so it looks like we're going to be sticking around for a while!
Life in Cayman has been great. Especially this last weekend! Mom and Dad came to visit!! They always like to scope out where I'm living. Partially because I live on a cool island, but also I don't think Dad fully trusts my ability to find suitable/safe housing. It was one bad apartment in Hawaii and I don't think I'll ever live it down! Anyway, my parents came over on Friday and we did a whirlwind weekend tour of Grand Cayman!
On Friday I took them to my favorite local bar, Rackems. Regardless of the fact that no dive instructors have normal Monday-Friday work schedules, Friday night, Rackems is always packed with divers. It's a great little waterfront bar and restaurant and a great induction to life on the island.
Saturday we woke up and went for a couple dives. We got certified as a family when I was 12, the minimum age to learn to dive. At that time, my parents were watching me all the time and making sure I was fine. Now that I'm an instructor, the tables have turned and I'm the one checking on them under water! Our first dive was at Mike's dive shop, Don Foster's. It's a great little shore dive. Even though we couldn't find the local seahorse, we had lots of fish life and beautiful, happy, healthy corals. Our second dive was my favorite shore dive, a spot officially called Turtle Reef, but locally known as Macabuca, the name of the tiki bar next to the dive shop. It's a mini wall dive, with the reef starting at about 25 feet deep and then dropping to about 60 feet. We had a little bit of current on the dive, which made swimming along the wall a bit more challenging, but when we rounded the corner and got out of the current we found about 20-30 tarpon! That was definitely the highlight of that dive. After our dive, we had lunch at Macabuca, which has great food and some pretty awesome rum punch as well!
On Sunday I was most excited for brunch. Brunch is an institution in Cayman, but I'm always working on Sunday so I've never gotten to go! Since Mom and Dad rented a car, we went to the East End for brunch. That's the other side of the island, so it takes about 45 minutes to get there. It's a nice drive, some of it is right along the coast. We stopped a couple times to check out the quiet beaches of the Eastern districts. Brunch was an event! All you can eat Australian/Caribbean fusion buffet with optional all you drink champagne! Yes please! It was awesome. I think the best was the kangaroo sushi and BBQ pork and chicken skewers. We sat out on a balcony overlooking the shallow water and even saw a nurse shark cruising around while we were eating! After eating way too much food, we took a drive over to the north side of the island for a few cocktails and beach exploring.
Overall, it was a great weekend, but it went by wayyyy too fast! It was a great little vacation for me and Mike as well. This is the first weekend we've had off since we moved here!
I'll try to start updating on a more regular basis now that I've got a pretty solid routine and I know what's going on!
Love and fishes!!!
